Spirit of '76 Re-Awakens

Come to montstock august 2010 all-70s mega reunion

UPDATE 12/30/07 Have suddenly been getting emails from folks hitting this website showing marked enthusiasm from those who attended the 2006 show. Let's face it, 2010 is not all that far off. I have credit cards and batteries with later expiration dates than that. This time my sister Dee and many of her friends are on board. With this much interest already being displayed, the challenge will be accomodations. For instance if we do the Friday night Tierney's thing, I'll tell Jim Tierney we need to have the whole place, not just upstairs. For the day at the High School we absolutely will need access to the gym and amphitheater. I've discussed reserving the Commonwealth Club again and I'm told we should be okay. This time we'll need every inch of space and perhaps overflow tents in front. Other activities being discussed are a buffet breakfast at Pal's Cabin followed by a nature hike through Eagle Rock Reservation. Edgemont Park has been our tradition for the Sunday, however we're not married to that venue. I assume the expansion they are planning to build on to the school should be finished by then. Also the Woodman Field upgrade should be completely done so we may want to switch it there. I'll be meeting with the Building and Grounds Department in 2008 to look things over and make a decision.

UPDATE 3/14/07 Yes, preliminary planning has begun for the Montstock Festival to be held in August 2010, but instead of Max Yasgur's farm we will setup tents and be in the Amphitheater. Pending approval there will be two bands, food, frisbees, possible access to gym if rain. Hotel accomodations will be with Marriott exit 158 (10 mins). Evening festivities to be at the Commonwealth Club, quiet music, light food, huge open bar, and quality time for visiting. Time and details TBD as we get closer.

UPDATE 12/8/06 Herb Lobdell '75 called me the other day, he got my info from Geoff Lawes. He's organizing a Montclair Alumni cruise next summer at low cost since he ownes a Cruise company. Herb is at 561-691-9448, or Herblobdell@myexcel.com for details.

UPDATE 10/2/06 Since July I've received a steady stream of emails of requests to be added to the distribution list.  For some who found out about 2006 too late to attend, that should be less a reason for the next big one which will be in 2010. The goal is to have better access to the school grounds for that Saturday and we'll have low-cost get-togethers each evening. No loud music, I promise. Please keep sending your updates for the address list.  And unfortunatly I've had to make more additions to the Remembrance page.

UPDATE 7/28/06: Took me this long to recover after returning home Monday night. Thanks for being patient. I'll soon send out a feedback form email and this weekend I'll begin further work on the website. Requests to provide people's contact information and to post remembrance board names are high on my list. Later will create a group Web log (blog, and toying with possible target dates for when we should hold next reunion either in 2008 or 2010. May also consider posting photos on ShutterFly website if can't post them all the way I want here.

UPDATE 7/24/06: Despite the neverending storms and power outages, we won. Our lovely hat-ladies, Gigi Stier and Debby Doubleday came prepared for anything of course. On Sunday the skies cleared as mother nature realized she was defeated, and on a perfect afternoon in front of Edgemont park a large number gathered to bond one last time, all asking the same question: "When will we have the next one?"

UPDATE 7/23/06: This one will definitely become part of Montclair legend and lore. The night we lit up the Commonwealth club and watched it burn. Part surreal epiphany, part Twilight Zone, it was a night all of us will long remember. Huge thanks to Kelly Kaplan and Kevin Martin for owning responsibility for and supervising our vendors. Also Ellyn Minor and Beth Pugh for an exemplary check-in process. And I still can't believe we ran out to restock the bar three separate times. Boy you guys taught us the score there.

Earlier that afternoon a large group visited the High School and had a group photo taken in the Amphitheater. We served lunch and had music in the new George Inniss Cafeteria, which we almost did not get because the film crew and cast of the Sopranos were scheduled to use it beginning Monday.

UPDATE 7/22/06: Tierney's filled past capacity making it a huge blow-out. We were besieged with accolades as it being "the best reunion party ever." Most gratifying was seeing long-lost friends suddenly recognize each other and erupt with shrieks of glee. This is everything we hoped it would be.

UPDATE 7/21/06: For Saturday our rallying point will be across the street at George Inniss due to the amphitheater being closed. Why? Bldg & Grounds tells me some of the trees are "precarious" from the storm and could be a safety issue.

Please do not respond to Reunions Unlimited. You may have received a flyer in the mail from that company. We are done working with them. If you reply we will not get a copy. Instead send us your email address and we'll keep you informed.

2006 Highlights:

  • July 21, Friday, 7-11 pm, Tierney's Pub, Upstairs. Band "SusieQ & the Crew" 10 pm.
  • July 22, Saturday afternoon, 1-4:30 pm, Change: We ended up at George Inniss, food and refreshments, 3 pm Group Photos in Amphitheater.
  • Saturday evening: 6:30-midnight, Commonwealth Club, Cocktails, PARTY, open bar, food, music, dancing.
  • July 23, Sunday, Edgemont Park, Picnic. Everyone brought blankets and camp chairs. It was great.

Costs: All events were optional and designed to be pay-as-you-go. However for the Commonwealth Club Dinner Dance, the per person cost was $50.

Given how things went, our goal for 2010 is to cut the per-person costs even further. Our target will be closer to $25 per person, if you can believe it. The food was great, but input we've received was that we can do with less food and even less music. The fun was being able to walk back in time and visit.

Attire: All events were casual, however I'm glad now that people had the insight to dress up a bit for the Commonwealth Club. That will be the plan again for 2010. --bd
